$10,000 to Lesbian Writers! Deadline EXTENDED: Wednesday, July 15, 2009 (for receipt in Astraea’s office)

Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice works for social, racial and economic justice in the U.S. and internationally. Our grantmaking and philanthropic advocacy programs help lesbians and allied communities challenge oppression and claim their human rights.

For emerging lesbian poets and fiction writers within the U.S. First place awardees and two runners-up in the poetry and fiction categories will receive cash awards ($10,000 for awardee, $1,500 for runners-up).  Thanks to Skip’s Sappho Fund, at least one grant will be awarded to a lesbian writer who is based west of the Mississippi River.  Please note that the application is in two documents – please read both thoroughly before compiling and sending in your application.  Please make sure to read the guidelines thoroughly for eligibility criteria and submission instructions. There will be an ID number on the application when you download it from the web.

In an essay written in 1983, Nicole Brossard wrote: “Une lesbienne qui ne reinvente pas le monde est une lesbienne en voie de disparition.” (A lesbian who does not reinvent the world is a lesbian going extinct.)  Have we gone quiet as lesbians  (not denying our lesbianism but seldom foregrounding it)? Are we still reinventing the world? As writers, are we inventing new forms? Is there still a radical edge to the word “lesbian”? Or are we now, by Brossard’s definition, a disappearing species?

We want to hear from young lesbians as well as anyone who ever embraced and/or lived this notion of lesbians as political trailblazers, radical visionaries.  Do you still identify as a political trailblazer, a radical visionary?   OLOC proudly announces its REGIONAL GATHERING in Columbia,

S.C., Friday, July 17th through Sunday, July 19th, 2009.   

 Our agenda includes group discussions on empowering old Lesbians to become activists for change, and promoting Lesbian visibility and pride across the U.S. 

 Diverse workshops will focus on utilizing our strengths to fight ageism, racism and oppression  within our own as well as the larger Lesbian communities.

lesbian identity.   what it means to be lesbian is often expressed and understood through poetry. This issue of Sinister Wisdom
seeks poems by thirty to forty contemporary lesbian poets, each paired
with a poem by a lesbian poet of yore. Think about what work inspires
your work and submit creative, eclectic, interesting, and unusual
pairings for consideration.
